Cyclesport Jr. Criterium Championship

With the end of the criterium season getting close, the Junior AC team made a pilgrimage out to Livermore, where the Junior State Championship was held.

With two riders in Junior 13-14 (Spence and Skyler), and four in the 15-16 race (Bjorn, Isaiah, Alex and Bob), we had a good-sized contingent - even enough to go against the Red Plague (Specialized) team!

First up were the 13-14 boys (about 15 boys, and Katrina Howard).

The race varied in pace over its 20 laps, with a couple of attacks, then settling down into a relatively sedate pace.

Toward the end, the pace picked up, with a group heading out hard, and ending up with a bunch sprint between Dylan Drummond, Spence, Matt Valencia and Katrina Howard.

Turn 4 into the finish straight really set up the sprints, and a good exit was critical to get into the right position. Spence and Dylan hammered down the finish straight, and though it was very close, Dylan captured first this time. Spence came in second by a few feet, and Skyler headed up the gruppeto following the main break, with a solid sixth place.

With a two-hour break between races, the AC Masters (Blair, Ken and Rich) decided to head out for a little ride of their own - a brief tour of Collier Canyon. There was some brisk riding, particularly the finish descent, where Ken acted as the motor-pacer for Blair, and they hammered down to the race start at 30+ MPH.

While the dads relaxed, the 15-16 boys lined up for the start.

In contrast to some of the recent crits, this was JUST the 15-16 boys, so none of the bigger 17-18 racers were in the group of 40 or so boys. The group took off for their 22 laps (about 18 miles).

With some back-and-forth, the AC team members took control of the early laps, with Bob jumping into a break and controlling the pace for a few laps, then Alex and Isaiah taking turns catching the other breaks as they developed. Both Bob and Alex put huge efforts into the first half of the race and helped control it well.

Then the second half of the race a break developed with Bjorn and three others, who stayed out the rest of the race, Once again, Turn 4 was key, and there was a big sprint at the end - Bjorn made it in at fourth place, after pulling strongly earlier in the race.

Isaiah, Bob and Alex finished further back, having worked hard on the attacks for much of the race. It was impressive to watch some of the tactics and control that the boys put out this race, and the results don't do justice to the amount of work that they put in on the race - great effort and progress for the boys!

After all that fun riding and racing, a group of six of us (Blair, Rich, Spence, Bob, Alex, Skyler) decided to go ride Mt. Diablo, so we spent a couple of hours adding another 3900 feet of climbing to the day.

It was pretty impressive to see Spence and Skyler leading the group up to the top. The last 200 meters kicked up just to throw salt in the wounds, after about 1.5 hours of climbing!

A fine day of riding all around, and great progress from the boys.

Some of the racers also had comments to add on the race:

Spence:
The 13-14 race had the same showing of riders this weekend as in past races, and winning was obviously was a big goal for every rider because it was state champs. Due to the race being state champs, the race started with an unusually huge number of attacks, and more and more kept going off until the end of the race.

After the start, we rode a couple of laps and as we came around the back side on the 3rd lap, I made an attack. I was suprised how easy I got away, and I rode a couple of laps off the front about 20 meters. I started to see the pack getting a lot closer, so I pulled back. Skyler and I sat mostly in the pack the whole race, preparing for the sprint, and I came around the last corner on the last lap in 2nd, and I ended up finishing 2nd. I felt pretty happy about my result because everything went smoothly, but I wish I would have positioned myself a little better before the last corner though.

Alex:
I think its great that Bjorn got 4th. I bet that if Bjorn made an attack with maybe 6 or 7 laps to go he could stay out with a great finish, while Isaiah, Bob and I could slow down the pack to give him a lead. This worked really well at Snelling.

Isaiah:
Before the race, Bjorn, Alex, Bob, and I scouted out where to be in the peloton on each side of the course, due to the fairly high winds. During first part race, lots of half-hearted attacks (the kind I hate). Eventually a four-man breakaway got away which I wasn't in, partly because I was sitting too far back in the peloton at that time and also because my legs felt pretty bad. Luckily, Bjorn was in it. I tried to bridge up, because I didn't think Bjorn would have a good chance of beating James Laberge, but I wasn't able to. I burnt too many matches trying to bridge up and sucked in the final sprint, finishing way back of my usual 4-6th place.

SugarCRM Memorial Day Crit - Results & Photos

Today's crit was successful in many ways, not the least of which there were no crashes. This was a fast crit course down in a Morgan Hill industrial park, and was the site of a bad crash last year that anyone who was there will not likely forget.

Today though, there was nothing but good, clean racing, and some good results for the AC Juniors. This was undoubtedly helped by the moderate weather (high 70's) in a place that can sometimes be baking into the high 90's. So everyone was able to push themselves hard, and the results showed.

There are a few pictures today, but only with my (poor quality) camera phone.

Junior 13-14 Men:

The AC Juniors had two entrants (Spence and Skyler), and they fought it out in a pretty large group - maybe 30-40 kids in the U14 class. Since both boys and girls raced together, there was some interesting competition, between traditional rivals (such as Dylan Drummond), as well as Katrina Howard.

After switching positions during the race, and jockeying for position on the last couple of laps (of a 30 minute criterium), Spence managed to get into the front of the pack, along with Katrina Howard and another girl. The girls were running strongly, and Katrina and Dominque Van Den Dries crossed the line just ahead of Spence. Skyler came in 6th with a strong finish as well.

Junior 15-16 Men:
In addition to Alex and Isaiah (Bob was a DNS with some lingering injuries from last week's crash), Spence and Skyler hopped right back onto the race course for this very fast group. Along with all the Junior 15-16 boys, there were a large group of Junior 17-18 "men" who controlled the race from the start.

The Specialized team showed particular strength with one of their riders (Charlie Avis) who solo'd almost the entire race, winning with a gap of 15-20 seconds over the entire field. Isaiah and Alex worked together and with the pack, finishing strongly in the main group. Many other riders were cut from the race because of the fast pace, so both Spence and Skyler had some good racing in the pack, but finished "early"

Isaiah finished with a 4th place, and Alex with 5th, so two more podiums for AC Juniors today!

Good fast racing today and there are encouraging signs of working together - if only AC had 7 or 8 riders in a race like the Specialized team did - they were able to control the entire peloton in the Junior 15-16 race to help Avis win.

Hope you all had a good Memorial Day weekend, and we'll see you at Spring Hill next week.

Panoche Valley Road Race - Sunny with a chance of heatstroke

Today was a brutal first-person experience of global warming.

Panoche Valley (located south of Hollister) started with a bang - about 80 degrees at 8 AM when Spence headed out with the Junior 13-14 riders.

It quickly escalated up past 90 and then was over 100 by about 10 AM. We had four riders - Spence, Bob, Alex (both racing Junior 15-16), and me (racing Elite 5).

Spence did very well on his 20 mile (10 miles, out and back) race, working with the breakaway group, and then coming in third on the final sprint. Fortunately for this Junior 13-14 group, they were able to turn around at the halfway point, and avoid some of the harder climbing.

Bob and Alex, went out at 8:50 AM, when it was pushing 90, and had a long, hard, hot slog up about 2500+ feet of climbing over the 20 miles to the turnaround. By the time they got to the top, where the water/feed stop was, it was 107 or thereabouts. They wisely chose to stop there for awhile, get rehydrated, and then headed back down at a reasonable rate - the main peloton had gone charging ahead. I met them at about 33 miles, and gave them a ride back in the air conditioned car, to avoid heatstroke.

I raced Elite 5, and proved that it's still a stretch to compete at that level ;-) I managed to lead the pack for the first 4 miles, and then got ceremoniously dropped on one of the hills, so rode out the remaining 36 miles in a time trail. I felt like it was an accomplishment just to finish, and not be seeing spots! Maybe one of the most grueling rides in memory, though the course itself was not particularly hard - the heat made any strong efforts very, very tough.

Here's a profile of my ride - about 2,200 feet of climbing, and it really kicked up on the second half of the climb. See http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8249095

Congratulations to Spence on his strong effort today! Let's all hope for more reasonable temperatures at the upcoming races.

Big thanks to Blair for the tent and water bucket - we would have been parched roadkill without them (speaking of roadkill, I did see a partially flattened rattlesnake on the course...)

Next week - Memorial Day Criterium - hope to see you there - pray for cool weather!

UPDATED - Berkeley Hill Road Race - Results

Tom Fox provided this brief update on the Sunday race in Berkeley:

We went to watch Bjorn race at Berkeley Hills road race yesterday - it was a gorgeous day and it looks like a beautiful course.

I followed the neutral start up to the main loop of the Juniors race and rode the course backwards to the finish line, very hilly, with incredible landscape (doesn't feel like Berkeley). It would be fun to do this race next year with the AC Masters.

Bjorn had a good race but he got mingled in with another group on the sprint for the finish and blocked on the sprint. With the center line rule there was nowhere for him to go and he just stopped sprinting. I think he ended up in 3rd place in the end. It was a pretty large group of Juniors in the 13 - 14, 15 - 16 category.

Off and Running

Welcome to TifosiMarin - a cycling blog focused on Marin County, including the exploits of the Above Category Junior (and Masters) racers.

The first postings will catch us up to the current times, recounting the exploits over the 2008 and 2009 racing season. Then we'll add new events and other items of interest over time.

This is likely to NOT be a "clever" blog like BikeSnobNYC, so don't get your hopes up...

UPDATED - Cat's Hill Criterium - Los Gatos (RESULTS) and Wente results too!)

Trying to catch up from last week – two races to report on:

Wente Road Race - Pleasanton

First, here are the Wente Road Race Results – they were finally published at http://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?year=2009&id=1092&info_id=16594

Junior 15-16:
Bjorn Fox – 2nd Place
Bob Siegel – 11th Place
Alex Howard – 15th Place

I also raced but had “dead legs” so didn’t do anything of note…as for pictures, I think Katie Fox has some, so perhaps she will send out a link later.

Cat's Hill Criterium - Los Gatos

Now, on to this weekend – the Cat’s Hill Criterium down in Los Gatos. This was the second year the boys raced here - good results this year!

Amidst clouds and rain, there was a strong turnout, and Team AC was represented by Spence and Skyler in Junior 13-14, with Bjorn, Isaiah, Bob, Alex, and Spence (second race of the day!) in the Junior 15-16 class.

Everyone did well, and fortunately no crashes marred this event. The course was damp at the Junior 13-14 race, but dried out for the Junior 15-16’s.

UPDATED - Results are now up at http://www.usacycling.org/results/index.php?event=2009-997

Junior 13-14:
Spence Peterson – 3rd Place (including winning a prime on one lap – he came away with TWO pizzas!)
Skyler Taylor – 6th Place (might have been 5th – someone else can confirm?)

Junior 15-16:
Amidst a large crowd mixed between 15-16, and 17-18 (totaling around 60-70 riders, the boys did very well overall:
Isaiah Rapko – 4th Place
Bjorn Fox – 7th Place
Bob Siegel – 12th Place
Spence Peterson – 14th Place
Alex Howard – 16th Place (because of a mechanical going up the steep hill at one point – cost him a lap)

Pictures are here: http://picasaweb.google.com/glocalize/200905CatSHillCriterium?feat=directlink

Thanks to Blair for driving and setting up the tent – awesome location ½ block from the start! And to Ken for driving (so I could be a passenger this time!). And our friend Rich Frasier watched – visiting from Portland.
Fun day of racing, once again!
