SugarCRM Memorial Day Crit - Results & Photos

Today's crit was successful in many ways, not the least of which there were no crashes. This was a fast crit course down in a Morgan Hill industrial park, and was the site of a bad crash last year that anyone who was there will not likely forget.

Today though, there was nothing but good, clean racing, and some good results for the AC Juniors. This was undoubtedly helped by the moderate weather (high 70's) in a place that can sometimes be baking into the high 90's. So everyone was able to push themselves hard, and the results showed.

There are a few pictures today, but only with my (poor quality) camera phone.

Junior 13-14 Men:

The AC Juniors had two entrants (Spence and Skyler), and they fought it out in a pretty large group - maybe 30-40 kids in the U14 class. Since both boys and girls raced together, there was some interesting competition, between traditional rivals (such as Dylan Drummond), as well as Katrina Howard.

After switching positions during the race, and jockeying for position on the last couple of laps (of a 30 minute criterium), Spence managed to get into the front of the pack, along with Katrina Howard and another girl. The girls were running strongly, and Katrina and Dominque Van Den Dries crossed the line just ahead of Spence. Skyler came in 6th with a strong finish as well.

Junior 15-16 Men:
In addition to Alex and Isaiah (Bob was a DNS with some lingering injuries from last week's crash), Spence and Skyler hopped right back onto the race course for this very fast group. Along with all the Junior 15-16 boys, there were a large group of Junior 17-18 "men" who controlled the race from the start.

The Specialized team showed particular strength with one of their riders (Charlie Avis) who solo'd almost the entire race, winning with a gap of 15-20 seconds over the entire field. Isaiah and Alex worked together and with the pack, finishing strongly in the main group. Many other riders were cut from the race because of the fast pace, so both Spence and Skyler had some good racing in the pack, but finished "early"

Isaiah finished with a 4th place, and Alex with 5th, so two more podiums for AC Juniors today!

Good fast racing today and there are encouraging signs of working together - if only AC had 7 or 8 riders in a race like the Specialized team did - they were able to control the entire peloton in the Junior 15-16 race to help Avis win.

Hope you all had a good Memorial Day weekend, and we'll see you at Spring Hill next week.
